What Courses are required for Engineering?

What are the academic policies for Engineering?

The following admission standard was adopted Summer 2013 and applies to the incoming class of Fall 2013:

New Freshmen and Transfer Students
Declaring the engineering major when registering for orientation will enable students to be assigned to an engineering advisor during Freshmen or Transfer Orientation who can answer questions and help them to plan a course of academic study. The BS in engineering degree is not a freshman admit program. Typically, students will apply for the BS in engineering degree after their second semester sophomore year and will be formally admitted into the program at that time.

Currently Enrolled Major Changers
In order to change one’s major to engineering, a student must complete a “Change or Declaration of Major” form and submit it to the Engineering Student Coordinator. Once the student has met with the student coordinator and determined his or her academic path, the form must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar.

Admission Information
The BS in Engineering has become an increasingly popular major for students. This, combined with resource constraints, require the Engineering program to limit admission. Thus, each cohort entering the junior year is limited to 85 students, including students who transfer to JMU under an articulation agreement or whose transcripts qualify them to enroll in junior-level Engineering courses.
To be eligible to apply for admission, students must have completed the following:
  1. All courses (or approved equivalents) required for the Engineering major with a grade of “C” or higher:
    • MATH 235, 236, 237, 238
    • PHYS 240, 140L, 250, 150L
    • CHEM 131, 131L and CHEM 132, 132L or CHEM 133E, 133LE
    • ENGR 112, 212, 221, 231, 232
  2. Any of the above courses may only be repeated once to be considered for admission.
  3. No more than 85 students (including transfer students with qualifying transcripts) will be admitted to the major at the junior-level. If more than 85 students meet the above standards, enrollment will be limited to the top 85 students. For on-campus students, the admission criterion will be grade point average (GPA) in the five ENGR courses (112, 212, 221, 231, 232). In the event of a tie, GPA in the lower-division courses required for the Engineering major (listed in #1 above) will be used as a tie-breaker. The Student Coordinator will work with the Engineering AUH to assess the relative merit of transfer students. Students who are not among the top 85 in their cohort may elect to wait one year and be considered with the next cohort, if they so choose, though the same selection criteria would apply.
Progressing in the Major
Once admitted to the engineering program, students must maintain an in-major and cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher (per JMU requirements.)
Once admitted, any course required as part of the engineering major may only be repeated once.

The following prerequisites apply to students who started the engineering program prior to Fall 2013:

How do I request an override into an Engineering class for which I do not have the prerequisites?

How do I request an override into a course outside of Engineering?
Check individual departmental websites or contact the departments directly.

What are the computer requirements for Engineering?
This link will take you to the JMU bookstore for the specs for the Engineering laptop.  You are not required to purchase one of these machines, but make sure that you have the minimum specifications for the software that you will need for ENGR 112.

What if I decide to leave JMU?

How do I transfer credit into JMU?
A student wishing to earn credits at another institution, either during the summer or during a regular session, must obtain permission from the Office of the Registrar in advance of taking courses from another institution.  Course descriptions are required for courses taken outside the Virginia Community College System.  The Office of the Registrar will make the determination concerning the course and its application toward a JMU degree following consultation with the head of a department or the director of the school, if necessary.  Permission to transfer credit into the General Education Program will be based on an evaluation of the extent to which the course meets the objective of the General Education Program.  To complete final hours away from JMU, students must have the approval of the dean of their major.  The Permission to Take Courses for Transfer Credit form is available in the Office of the Registrar or by clicking on the following link:

How do I request a copy of my transcripts?
Transcripts are issued at the written request of the student.  The request can be submitted three ways, via e-campus, by completing the Transcript Request Form or via a written letter.  Mailed transcripts will be sent within three to five business days after we receive your request.  There is no charge for transcripts.

What is Academic Probation and/or Suspension?

How do I change my major?
Complete the Change of Major Form (available in the Engineering office).  The form must be signed by the department head of the program you wish to switch to.  The change of major is not complete until the form is signed and taken to the Registrar's Office.

Can I do ROTC and Engineering?
Yes!  ROTC is a great way to gain the leadership skills needed for the real world.  Please see the military science website for more information.

What is the difference between repeat for credit and repeat forgive?
You took a course last semester and didn’t do well in it and would like to retake the course next semester to earn a better grade.  At JMU a student may repeat any courses she or he has taken at JMU so you will be able to enroll in the course again (provided space is available, of course).  Every attempt at a course is included in the calculation of the grade point average with one exception available to undergraduates known as the “repeat forgiveness” option. Under the repeat forgiveness option the hours attempted and quality points earned on the first course attempt are excluded from the cumulative grade point average calculation, regardless of whether the previous grade was higher or lower than the second or repeat attempt.

What difference will electing to use the repeat forgiveness option rather than repeat credit option make in the cumulative average?  Suppose you have attempted 30 credits and earned 65 quality points during your JMU career, resulting in a grade point average of 2.166.  You received an “F” grade in one three-credit class and would like to retake the class.  If you take the course as a repeat credit and earn a “C”, then your grade point average will be calculated on 33 credits attempted (30 + 3) and 71 quality points earned (65 + 6), or 2.151.  If you choose the repeat forgiveness option, then your grade point average will be 2.366 (71/30) because the attempted hours (3) and quality points earned (0) from the first attempt will be excluded from the grade point calculation.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?  There are a few things to keep in mind when you retake a course, however.

(1)   You must declare the repeat credit (REIG) or repeat forgiveness (RFCP) option when you register for the class.

(2) You are allowed to use the repeat forgiveness option only two times in your undergraduate academic career, and you must declare the option before the semester schedule adjustment deadline.  You can’t go back and change the repeat option after the semester has ended.

(3) Regardless of whether you retake a course as a repeat or repeat forgiveness option, all attempts and grades earned will appear on the transcript.  The second grade will not replace the first grade on the transcript.

4) A repeated course will count only once toward satisfying graduation requirements.  If you earned a “D” in a three-credit course and then retake it later and earn a “C,” the two attempts will result in only three earned credit hours.

(5) Courses for which the grade was assigned as a result of an honor code violation cannot be retaken using the repeat forgiveness option.

How do I find my professor's contact information?

Your professor's office hours and location, phone number and email address should all be located on your class syllabus.

You can also find anyone's (student or employee) contact information using the JMU Directory:
