2012 Fling Teams

For a complete list of the 2012 Fling teams, click here:  https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B3DDzBeaKU0gMzljYzZBOTdNSXM

This is organized by name with your team name beside it.  Note, I did not include email addresses because this is a public document, so I did not want to post.  However, as I showed you all at orientation, you can search for students' email addresses using the Campus Directory:

If you came to Saturday's meeting and were assigned a new team number (309), please email me ASAP.  I don't have your information and did not include you on the chart.  Thanks!

Student Organization Night

While your academic life is your first priority, it also is important to be involved in activities of interest outside the classroom.  JMU has numerous clubs addressing almost every interest you could have.  Student Organization Night is an opportunity to talk with representatives from most of the student organizations to find out more information.  Be careful not to over commit your time, but it is good to see what is available.

UREC Upper Turf

Graduation Club

Leaving Orientation you probably felt a bit overwhelmed. Were you anxious about your classes and your time-management skills? You're not alone! You know what you're supposed to do to be successful, the trouble is motivating yourself to do those things! College will be filled with opportunities to get involved in lots of great activities. Sometimes those activities will seem a lot more fun than hitting the books, reviewing notes, or even going to class. We have something to help... GRADUATION CLUB!

Course Instructors will help students learn how to remain motivated and get the most out of their study time. The following issues are often problem areas for new students and will be discussed:
  • Setting Goals and Staying Motivated
  • Learning Styles
  • How to read those BIG, FAT textbooks!
  • Lecture Note Taking
  • Time and Stress Management
  • Test-Taking Strategies
  • Study Skills
  • Interacting with Professors

Making the Grade

"I learned a lot and my GPA proves it. I did so well first semester that I was even offered a chance to be in JMU's honor program. I know I wouldn't [have] done nearly as well as I did if I hadn't attended [your] class." - Graduation Club participant

Grad Club starts the third week of class

Each class will meet one hour per week for five weeks. Class begins the second week of classes. You won't need to spend a lot of time on class preparation for the Graduation Club, because you'll be using what you learn to prepare for all your other classes. Pretty good deal!

Graduation Club Sign-ups

Come to FYI on Monday, September 3rd OR Tuesday, September 4th from 1:00pm to 9:00pm to sign up!

If you want more information, please contact FYI (540-568-3598).

Important Deadlines

As the semester begins we would like to make you aware of the class add/drop and adjustment deadlines so you can plan appropriately.    The deadlines will be strictly enforced, so please make necessary changes before the deadlines pass in order to complete the transactions.

The deadlines for dropping and/or adding fall semester classes on MyMadison are as follows (dropping a class after these dates but before the course adjustment deadlines result in a “W” grade on the transcript and tuition charges):

Semester Class:  Tuesday, September 4, 2012
First eight-week class:  Tuesday, September 4, 2012
Second eight-week class:  Monday, October 22, 2012

The deadlines for adding classes with instructor and academic unit head permission are as follows (students will not be allowed to add classes after these deadlines and should not be attending a class which is not on their MyMadison schedule):

Semester class:  Thursday, September 13, 2012
First eight-week class:  Thursday, September 13, 2012
Second eight-week class:  Wednesday, October 31, 2012

Please be aware that receiving an override into a full class does not automatically enroll you in the class.  You must register on MyMadison.   Please note, you will need an override from the academic unit to add classes during the add with permissions period.

The course adjustment deadlines (to withdraw with a W grade or change credit or repeat options) are as follows:

Semester Class:  Thursday, October 25, 2012
First eight-week class:  Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Second eight-week class:  Thursday, November 15, 2012

After the course adjustment deadlines, you cannot withdraw from a class through MyMadison.

Please do not hesitate to contact the registrar's office if you have questions regarding the applicable registration and course adjustment dates and deadlines.

Monday, August 13, 2012

Dear Colleagues,

For planning purposes, I am writing to let you know that The FAA’s Design Competition for Universities will again be offered for the 2012 – 2013 academic year! The Competition has been significantly expanded.  New topics have been added to the 2012 Design Challenge areas. In addition, two new Design Challenge areas have been added: Innovative Application of FAA Data and Electric/Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Technology.

The new Innovative Application of FAA Data design challenge challenges students to use FAA, industry, travel and airport-relevant data to develop a mobile application for use for by smart phones and tables that is innovative and commercially viable.

The new Electric/Hybrid Electric Aircraft Technology design challenge asks students to design a regional transport aircraft that will use electric or hybrid electric propulsion and to consider the impact on airports.  This is the first aircraft design challenge for the FAA design competition.

Other brand new topics by Design Challenge area are:

Airport Operation and Maintenance:  Improved methods for ground traffic flow scheduling.

Airport Environmental Interactions:  System level methodologies for strategic assessment of environmental interactions beginning at the airport planning phase.

Runway Safety:  Safety Assessment Tools:
·        Mobile tools to support assessment conducted by runway safety action teams that aid in compliance evaluation as well as hazard identification and correction.

·        Systems analysis to determine areas of greatest risk for runway incursion and excursion in the National Airspace and proposing corrective action plans.

Airport Management and Planning:  Methods for aircraft/runway interface that address issues caused by new energy efficient lighting not being visible to heat sensing, enhance flight vision systems.

All 2012 design topics are also included in the new 2013 Competition guidelines.  The Competition guidelines and many resources will be posted at the Competition
website no later than August 13th:

 http://FAADesignCompetition.odu.edu

The Competition’s broad challenge categories embrace many engineering, science, information technology, psychology, and management disciplines.  The new Innovative Application of Aviation Data challenge particularly encourages designs from interdisciplinary teams.

The Competition is again open to individual and student teams at U.S. colleges and universities (both undergraduate and graduate) working under the mentorship of a faculty advisor.  Winners can earn cash awards and first place winners have the opportunity and travel funds to present their design at FAA Headquarters summer 2013.  A notice of intent is strongly encouraged. Design submissions are due April 19, 2013.

We hope you will participate in the Competition and make colleagues and students aware of this as well.

Please feel free to contact me or Debbie Ross (dross@odu.edu) if you have
any questions.
