Society of Women Engineers

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is an educational and service organization that empowers women to succeed and advance in the field of engineering, and to be recognized for their life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders. SWE establishes engineering as a highly desirable career for women through an exciting array of training and development programs, networking opportunities, scholarships, outreach and advocacy activities, and much more.
Our mission is to stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity.
We currently have chapter at James Madison University. JMU SWE is an elite group of women engineering and technology students who work to reach out into our community to establish engineering as a career aspiration to women.
JMU SWE concentrates on following goals and objectives:
  • Growing the Profession—To increase the number of women choosing to enter the engineering and technology profession.
  • Professional Excellence—To have the women in engineering and technology excel professionally, and their achievements are showcased and valued.
  • Industry Catalyst—To create SWE as a catalyst for changing the professional climate to enable women in engineering and technology to excel.

JMU Society of Women Engineers addresses these goals by providing professional development sessions at regional conferences for members in all career stages. We also create educational workshops to encourage young, developing students to pursue a STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) career. Running just as deep as the camaraderie we share, are the opportunities and resources that come along with membership.

Technical Entrepreneurship: Innovation is Not an Elective

In Summer 2012, Lehigh University is launching a new Master's of Engineering degree (M.Eng.) in Technical Entrepreneurship. Lehigh's 30-credit professional Master's program helps young entrepreneurs create, refine, and commercialize intellectual property through the licensing or launching of a new business. For recent graduates of engineering, business, science and design, Lehigh's program provides training in the art and practice of creating new companies while bringing revolutionary products and services to market. Students in the program learn by experiencing the idea-to-venture process in an educational environment that's hard-wired to support the development of novel, innovative and commercially-viable technologies.

The one-year, in-residence program draws upon Lehigh's deep-rooted and powerful ecosystem of programs dedicated to the teaching of business and technology innovation, building upon the success of such endeavors as Lehigh's Integrated Product Development (IPD) program and the Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation.

Please contact me if you would like to discuss the program in more detail, and thank you in advance for connecting interested students with this exciting opportunity.

John B. Ochs
Professor, Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics
Director, Integrated Product Development (IPD) Program
P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science
Lehigh University

INNOVATION IS NOT AN ELECTIVE

In any measure of business success, things must be going pretty well when a firm is listed between Google and Microsoft. Yet, that is exactly where EcoTech Marine found itself in September 2010, courtesy of a Newsweek article listing the top 10 companies that grew from college ideas into business juggernauts.

EcoTech Marine was brought to life through the savvy of student entrepreneurs who engaged the full range of idea- and business-development resources that Lehigh has to offer. The firm has experienced an eye-popping annual growth rate of 995%, and achieved a ranking of #302 in Inc. magazine's 2010 review of the 500 fastest growing U.S. companies.

And it's just one of an ever-growing list of successful start-ups incubating on our campus.

ARE YOU AN INNOVATOR

For recent graduates of engineering, business, science and design, Lehigh's Professional Master's program in Technical Entrepreneurship provides training in the art and practice of creating new companies while bringing revolutionary products and services to market. The one-year, in-residence program draws upon Lehigh's deep-rooted and powerful ecosystem of programs and resources dedicated to the teaching of entrepreneurship and technology innovation.

For more examples and program details, please visit the program Web site or contact Professor John Ochs, director of the Technical Entrepreneurship professional Master's program, with specific questions about the program.

Universum Survey Reminder:

Take the James Madison University Universum Student Survey – enter to win scholarships/internships.

Voice your opinions at:  http://unisurv.co/USSS

Because James Madison University students are highly sought after by employers, your opinions are extremely important and valuable sources of information. In fact, fewer than 10% of universities nationwide are asked to participate.

Top companies, including many that recruit James Madison University students, base their recruiting strategies on Universum’s research so it will truly benefit you and others on campus to share your opinions on recruiting and employers. Companies will only see the collective results, and your participation/identity will be kept confidential.

In appreciation for your time you will receive a free copy of the WetFeet Insider Guide: Brand Thyself (a $15 value!)

All respondents are also entered into the Universum 2011 Sweepstakes for a chance to win:
•             A $1,500 Scholarship
