Every year the Center for International Stabilization and Recovery/Mine Action Information Center at JMU selects one person to serve as the JMU Frasure-Kruzel-Drew Humanitarian Demining Fellow at the US Department of State. This is a prestigious, one-year paid internship position in the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in the DOS's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs. The Fellow must either be a JMU student or a recent graduate of JMU. The chosen intern must be able to receive a SECRET security clearance, which can take 4-5 months to complete.
The deadline to apply is December 2, 2011. Interviews will take place in mid-January. The tenure for the next internship is September 2012-August 2013 (this can vary slightly depending on when the security clearance is obtained).
The lucky intern is tasked with a variety of duties--everything from researching, writing reports, and creating PowerPoint presentations to assisting program managers develop country plans for mine action and helping to oversee country programs for the WRA office.
It's likely that he or she will also travel overseas some during the year. Previous fellows have traveled to Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Colombia, Peru, Senegal, Sudan, and Sri Lanka. This year the pay is $15.95 per hour for a 40-hour-per-week job.
