MLK speaker is a mechanical engineer, STEM education champion

Just wanted to bring to your attention the MLK Week speaker this year, Dr. Calvin Mackie, who is a mechanical engineer with a pretty interesting background, including recovery work in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

This background is from his website: A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Dr. Mackie graduated from high school with low SAT scores requiring him to undertake special remedial classes before he was admitted to Morehouse College. He completed his degree in Mathematics, graduating Magna Cum Laude and a member of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. He was simultaneously awarded a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, where he subsequently earned his Master and Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering.

Awards of note are the  2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering  Mentoring;  and in 2002, the Black Engineer of the Year Award  for College Level Educator.  He also published a book,  A View from the Roof: Lessons for Life and Business, which he will be signing after his talk on 1/16.

More information about Dr. Mackie is available here: http://www.channelzro.com/about.htm.

Here is the calendar information about his talk next Monday: Jan. 16: Formal Program with Keynote Speaker Dr. Calvin Mackie, 7 p.m., Wilson Hall: Dr. Calvin Mackie, an award-winning mentor, former engineering professor, internationally renowned motivational speaker and successful entrepreneur, speaks as part of 2012 MLK Celebration Week focused on "The Evolution of a Dream, A Legacy that Endures"; sponsored by the 2012 MLK Celebration Committee and the Center for Multicultural Student Services; doors open at 6:30 p.m.; free.
