Spring 2013 Registration for FIRST YEAR ENGINEERING STUDENTS

Brace yourself...this is a lengthy post!

But it's important!


Spring registration starts October 29th and many of you have or will have questions regarding your registration process, so I hope to answer most of those questions here.



1.  How are the appointment times for registration determined?
The order for registration is based on the number of credits you have, so students with more credits will register before students with less credits - freshmen will likely be some of the last students.  Honors students, athletes, students with disabilities will be assigned earlier appointments.  As freshmen, you’ll probably be registering for classes from Nov. 7 - Nov. 9.

2.  When is my appointment time?You can find your appointment time on your Student Center on MyMadison sometime during the week of October 22nd.  You will have access from the start of your appointment time through the drop/add period on January 15th:

3.  What classes am I supposed to take?
It depends.  Follow the curriculum guides below to help you determine your next semester:



Anyone who took MATH 231 should follow these guides, whether or not they took MATH 199E.







































As always, there are exceptions!  If you do not see your exact schedule listed here, do not hesitate to contact an advisor for help.

4.  Can I meet with an advisor to go over my schedule ahead of time?
Absolutely.  You should make an appointment with your advisor well in advance of your actual enrollment time to ensure that you have ample time to figure out your schedule.

5.  Where is my registration appointment?
This is not a dumb question!  You are on your own this time around - you will not come to your advisor’s office to register.  You can enroll anywhere as long as you have a computer and internet access - on-campus, in a computer lab, at home, Starbucks, wherever!

6.  How many credits should I take?
You must have at least 12 credit hours to be considered a full-time student, but you can register for up to 17 hours during your appointment time.  Once open enrollment starts (after everyone has had a chance to get their classes, the system will open up to everyone), then you can add up to 19 hours without permission.  Anything more than 19 credit hours will require permission from Dr. Kolvoord.

7.  Where can I get help when enrolling in classes?
The Madison Advising Peers will be conducting workshops on how to register for classes.  I will post the schedule as soon as I have it.

8.  What if I need a class that is closed?
You may be able to request an override.  Overrides are not automatic - they are up to the department’s discretion.  Overrides do not enroll you in the class - they only save you a spot, you still have to enroll.

9.  What if I have a hold on my account?
You will need to determine why you have the hold on your account.  You may do this by clicking on the hold and following the instructions to clear it up.  Some holds will not allow you to register for classes, so make sure you take care of these holds prior to your enrollment time.

10.  What about my Cluster One General Education classes?
All freshmen should finish their Cluster One General Education classes by the end of their freshmen year (this includes the summer).  You will not be able to take a Cluster One gen eds next year as they are reserved for freshmen only.  If you do not think you will be able to complete all three of your cluster one gen eds, please let me know immediately.
