ARTH 479-Automatons, Robots & Cyborgs

Left:  Metropolis (Fritz Lang 1927); Right  The Golem (Paul Wegener 1920)

Have you ever felt like a robot or automaton:  alienated, mechanized, forced to complete repetitive tasks over and over again until you’re ready to explode in a hysterical outburst?

If so, join me in exploring the visual history of automatons, robots and cyborgs in the early twentieth century!  If not, come find out about the future by exploring the past!

We will discuss examples by artists such as Otto Dix, George Grosz,  Fernand Léger, Hans Bellmer, Oskar Schlemmer, playwright Karel Čapek, and filmmaker Fritz Lang and more.
