Green Techfacturing Student Assistants


Are you going to around this summer?  Want a job helping kids?  JMU's Outreach & Engagement Office is looking for 8 student assistants. 

We have budgeted $10.15/hr and anticipate that they will work 20 hours. The schedule is below.

Monday, June 17- 8am-3pm
Tuesday, June 18- 8am-3pm
Wednesday, June 19- 8am-12:45pm
 
Each student assistant will be assigned to 12 students (middle school age) and will be with one faculty member on the shuttle and plant tour.
 
We would like to have students who enjoy working with this age group, can manage a classroom/behavior and have experience working with multi-media for the final presentation.

POSITION TITLE:           PROJECT COORDINATOR, CAPITAL PROJECTS

LOCATION:               FACILITIES MANAGEMENT, DEPARTMENT OF CAPITAL PROJECTS

RESPONSIBILITIES:             The Project Coordinator (PC) is a developmental, entry level position in the Department of Capital Projects (CAP).  CAP is responsible for managing capital construction projects from pre-design through construction, commissioning, equipping, furnishing and close-out.  CAP projects typically range from $1M to $100M and are located in College Park and other USM institutions throughout the state.  Incumbent will receive training and direct managerial oversight from an Assistant Director (AD), Project Management.  At the discretion of the AD, the incumbent may be asked to provide assistance to a Project Manager in conjunction with the incumbent’s developmental assignments.  The purpose of the training assignments, and the goal of this position, is to provide an opportunity to develop the capability to independently perform the tasks associated with managing capital construction projects. 
 
 The PC will be given assignments that vary and may include such tasks as:  review and become knowledgeable of construction documents; review and evaluate project submittals, e.g. RFIs, change order requests/bulletins; evaluate financial data; create project budgets; review project schedules to assess the proposed sequence of work; create project schedules; proofread various contract documents and prepare draft contract documents for the AD’s review; track required permit status and other time sensitive project elements.  Periodically, the PC will attend design and construction meetings, regular progress meetings, and periodic meetings to resolve technical issues and follow-up up on specific issues.  Miscellaneous assignments may include preparation of independent reports e.g., assessments of specific task assignments as noted above or other investigative/research assignments. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:  Bachelor's degree required in Architecture, Engineering, Project Management, or Construction Management.  Graduate degree in similar disciplines preferred.  Must possess and maintain a driver’s license valid in Maryland with fewer than 6 points.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:  Minimum six (6) months experience in architectural/engineering design, project management, or building construction.  Experience may be obtained through a paid or unpaid position.  Experience shall be cumulative, i.e., work during semester breaks over the course of the degree program.  Note:  A Graduate Degree shall be considered fulfilling the experience requirement.   Candidates must possess the basic knowledge of design and construction management practices;  the ability to coordinate multiple assignments;  ability to effectively communicate (in oral and written form) and to use a computer for e-mail, correspondence, reports, and spreadsheets;  ability to create independent reports;  ability to coordinate work with other members of the CAP organization and University community;  ability to ‘read’ construction drawings and apply associated construction specifications; and, ability to function in a team oriented environment.

SALARY/BENEFITS:  UM offers an excellent benefits package including health insurance, tuition remission, retirement, 25 days of leave, 14 holidays and 15 sick days.  Starting salary range is $52,780 - $65,975.

MOOCs Expand STEM Learning 
moocsWith student enrollment now in the millions, the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) revolution is spreading into engineering and other STEM fields as leading providers add more university partners. Stanford University recently joined the Harvard and MIT initiative to develop EdX, offering Stanford learning experiences to unlimited numbers of students virtually and for free.

Meanwhile, Coursera is celebrating its first full year in operation. MOOCs' capacity to offer a range of STEM lab experiences is currently limited, but this may change as software improves. Read more.

Malta Summer 2014


Malta 2014 Summer Study Abroad 
for Engineering, ISAT, Geographic Science, and IdLS 

The Malta Summer Study Abroad program is one of JMU’s longest-running international  programs. During the four-week program students explore the unique environmental, cultural, economic, and political issues of Malta. They are immersed in 7,000 years of history as they visit ancient temples and grand palaces. Megaliths, medieval dungeons, Renaissance cathe-drals, Baroque palaces, and some of the oldest known human structures, are located throughout the island. 

The six-credit hour May session program includes: 
  • A team oriented project/field work course with a Maltese mentors, 
  • Coursework investigating the interrelationships between technology, economics, history, and culture, and their implications for sustainability 
  • A cultural learning program, organized social and extracurricular activities. 


Students interested in learning more about the program are invited to attend the
