The ability to represent ideas using a solid modeling package is a critical skill for design engineers. Solid modeling not only allows a design engineer to convey design ideas, but also, it allows an engineer to quickly create prototypes using rapid manufacturing equipment. This lab course will teach the fundamentals of solid modeling using the SolidWorks software package as a entry point into fundamentals of rapid manufacturing. Students will be introduced to both additive and subtractive manufacturing processes through the use of both 3D printing and CNC equipment. The course will culminate in a project where students apply both solid modeling and rapid manufacturing following the engineering design process.
This is a one-credit technical elective course taught by Dr. Robert Nagel in the fall 2013. Look for date/time information in MyMadison.
