Capital One Career Opportunities

Since graduating from JMU in 2010, I have been with Capital One in their Information Technology Development Program (ITDP).  I have now been given a great opportunity to help do some recruiting at JMU, and am looking for candidates for the ITDP!

At first glance, most engineering students would probably shy away from a financial company.  However, the financial services industry has some of the highest stakes to protect the vast amounts of information we obtain and analyze.  Because of this, much of our business relies on our information technology.  We have found that engineers are perfect for some of the roles we are looking for, with the ability to solve real world problems, think analytically, and communicate issues and solutions to others.  Chris Tignor is in charge of Capital One's information security and is known to have built one of the best IS teams in the county - he is a JMU alum.  Several ITDP hires over the past couple of years have landed in his organization.

The ITDP is an awesome entry level opportunity and has multiple roles available, including Business Systems Analyst.  The job offers salaries on par with the industry, and competitive with other companies targeting engineering students.  Below is a great PDF that gives more background on the ITDP.

Capital One will be attending the career fair Monday 10/3 and performing on campus interviews the first week in November.  We have a job posting on Recruit-a-Duke as well, the application deadline being 10/20.  Here is a link to the posting https://jmu-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?mode=form&id=1ee9df6dd8b94bd4e81ed77429d4cc40&s=jobs&ss=jobs&.  For any questions regarding the Capital One recruiting process, students may reach out to Vanessa Mauskapf at vanessa.mauskapf@capitalone.com.

Students should feel free to contact me for any general questions about Capital One that they may have, at joshua.torkelson@capitalone.com.

2011-2012 Cluster One Preferences

2011-2012 Cluster One Preferences

As you know, your schedules are pretty tight and JMU strongly recommends that you complete all 3 of your Cluster One General Education classes by the end of your freshmen year. In order to make certain that you get the classes you still need, I am collecting information to help pre-register you for Spring semester Cluster 1 General Education classes. Please complete the following survey to indicate your choices. Completing this survey will allow the Registrar to automatically put you in the class(es) you need based on your choices. In order to accommodate your requests, you must complete the survey by September 26th. Any late surveys will not be viewed and you will be on your own to register for the remaining classes.

WhiteWave Foods Project (ENGR 280/480 Project Course)

ENGR 280/480 – Projects in Engineering
Fall 2011

WhiteWave Foods Company Projects

The WhiteWave Foods Company produces and bottles numerous brand name dairy, creamer, and juice products for worldwide distribution.  The WhiteWave plant in Mt. Crawford, VA, is one of the largest production facilities in the country for such products.

WhiteWave is currently seeking JMU engineering students to work alongside its plant technicians and personnel to identify causes of production inefficiencies and suggest solutions to improve manufacturing processes.  This work would be undertaken for two (2) elective academic credits in the ENGR 280/480 project course.

This is an exceptional opportunity for engineering students to experience a production facility, work beside practicing engineers and technicians, and practice engineering design and problem solving skills.  In addition to strengthening your resume through industry practice, participation may potentially lead to internship and/or employment opportunities.

Students interested in participating in this ENGR 280/480 course should contact Dr. Keith Holland (hollansk@jmu.edu) for additional information regarding the course and course registration.

*Note that this project will require students to make regular (weekly) visits to the WhiteWave Foods plant in Mt. Crawford, VA, an approximately 15 minute drive from the JMU campus.  Students will be expected to arrange their own transportation to/from the plant.

Deloitte- Recruiting in ISAT this fall!

We will be back on campus starting next Wednesday and will be handing out donuts, Deloitte t-shirts, and information about the positions that we are recruiting for on campus.  In addition to our Deloitte Technology Consulting recruitment efforts, we will have two other groups on campus that aim to recruit and hire both computer engineering and computer science students.
Our Technology Risk and Analytics and Forensic Technology groups will be hosting information tables in ISAT on September 9 and September 22 in an effort to socialize these opportunities with the ISAT students and answer any questions about potential career opportunities.  I am currently trying to get in touch with the Cyber Defense Club to schedule either an information session or roundtable discussion with the club members and our cyber security professionals, but am certainly open to any other student groups you think it would make sense to target.  If you are interested, I have attached  both job description to this email.

Finally, we are planning on having a faculty/student networking luncheon next Wednesday in the board room in Chandler so I will send you both invitations once those are finalized.

I look forward to meeting you soon!

Best,
Katie Crona
