Is a W on my transcript bad?

Each semester there are a specific deadlines for dropping a course with a 'W' instead of risking a failing grade.  The deadline to withdraw from Fall 2012 semester classes is Thursday, October 25th at 5pm.

What does the 'W' mean? The 'W' indicates that a course has been dropped.  A course that has been dropped with a 'W' does not impact your GPA calculation. The total number of 'W's' on a transcript may be a concern to a potential employer or a graduate school.

If dropping a course results in less than full-time semester status (12 hours), you should be aware of the impact on:
  • Financial Aid - Less than full-time status could impact the amount of aid that you can receive. Contact the Financial Aid Office with questions or to determine the impact of dropping below full-time status.

  • Medical and/or Automobile Insurance - Medical and/or automobile insurance companies may also require you to have full-time status to remain on a parent's insurance coverage. Check with your specific insurance company to determine the impact before dropping below full-time status.

Making the Most of Your LinkedIn Profile

Making the Most of Your LinkedIn Profile

BY ELIZABETH LIONS

Why are so many people confounded by today’s rapidly changing social media landscape? Like eating vegetables, we all know we need to be online and have a professional presence, but it gets confusing when it come to content, frequency and engagement. The most popular presentation I gave this year was on social media — how it works and why we should even bother.

Mostly, I get a lot of questions about using LinkedIn. Questions such as:

  • What should be on my LinkedIn profile?
  • Do I have it filled out enough?
  • What else should I put on there?
  • Should I have three recommendations?
  • Does my picture look ok?
  • Do I have to have a picture at all?
  • What do people look at when they read my profile?
  • How will a recruiter find me ?

To make it very easy, your LinkedIn profile should mirror your resume. Take out your resume and start there. Employers will look at your LinkedIn profile and it needs to match your resume or potential hiring authorities will be confused. As you can imagine, confusion isn’t the desired effect, and you may not get a call to interview.

Begin with the basics. Where you worked, how long you worked there and job title is fine. More than that, people will not have time to read, and won't be inclined to do so. My suggestion is to have a short page. Less is more. Being too detailed on LinkedIn could be a hindrance, rather than a help. Remember, this is just a snapshot of your professional skills and what you have to offer.

Which brings me to my next point. What do you have to offer? What unique skills and qualities do you have that a reader would be interested in? When you write, consider the reader at all times.

Ah, the dreaded picture. What should the picture look like? The picture should be simple and current. Carefully look at the background. Don’t allow the background to distract the reader.  Think of it this way: if you met someone you didn't know at a coffee shop, would they recognize you from your LinkedIn photo?

Recruiters will find you by titles and by key words. Fill out the skills section of LinkedIn from the drop-down menu’s skill words. Be creative. Use as many as you can to trip the search engine. Be broad as well. For example, if you are a software engineer, include words such as design, de-bugging, create, code, etc. As simple as that sounds, break it down for the reader and trip the search engine. Use a little industry jargon and pepper that in the profile as well.

Thirty-nine percent of LinkedIn users are managers, directors, owners, chief officers or presidents. The industries with the highest concentration are high tech (14.3%), finance (12.4%) and manufacturing (10.1%). Seventy-five percent use it for business purposes, and of all social media, it has the oldest users at an average of 44.2 years old.

Above all, remember you are writing your profile for others. There are real, live people on the other end of the computer screen.

Spring 2013 Registration for FIRST YEAR ENGINEERING STUDENTS

Brace yourself...this is a lengthy post!

But it's important!

Spring registration starts October 29th and many of you have or will have questions regarding your registration process, so I hope to answer most of those questions here.

1.  How are the appointment times for registration determined?
The order for registration is based on the number of credits you have, so students with more credits will register before students with less credits - freshmen will likely be some of the last students.  Honors students, athletes, students with disabilities will be assigned earlier appointments.  As freshmen, you’ll probably be registering for classes from Nov. 7 - Nov. 9.

2.  When is my appointment time? You can find your appointment time on your Student Center on MyMadison sometime during the week of October 22nd.  You will have access from the start of your appointment time through the drop/add period on January 15th:

Spring classes will be shown the week of October 22nd

3.  What classes am I supposed to take?
It depends.  Follow the curriculum guides below to help you determine your next semester:

Anyone who took MATH 231 should follow these guides, whether or not they took MATH 199E.

As always, there are exceptions!  If you do not see your exact schedule listed here, do not hesitate to contact an advisor for help.

4.  Can I meet with an advisor to go over my schedule ahead of time?
Absolutely.  You should make an appointment with your advisor well in advance of your actual enrollment time to ensure that you have ample time to figure out your schedule.

New this year...online scheduling and live chat support (during office hours) with Tiffany.  Click on the links above and to the right to use.

5.  Where is my registration appointment?
This is not a dumb question!  You are on your own this time around - you will not come to your advisor’s office to register.  You can enroll anywhere as long as you have a computer and internet access - on-campus, in a computer lab, at home, Starbucks, wherever!

6.  How many credits should I take?
You must have at least 12 credit hours to be considered a full-time student, but you can register for up to 17 hours during your appointment time.  Once open enrollment starts (after everyone has had a chance to get their classes, the system will open up to everyone), then you can add up to 19 hours without permission.  Anything more than 19 credit hours will require permission from Dr. Kolvoord.

7.  Where can I get help when enrolling in classes?
The Madison Advising Peers will be conducting workshops on how to register for classes.  I will post the schedule as soon as I have it.

Tutorials are also available to help with adding/swapping/dropping classes here:
http://isapps.jmu.edu/ecampus/

8.  What if I need a class that is closed?
You may be able to request an override.  Overrides are not automatic - they are up to the department’s discretion.  Overrides do not enroll you in the class - they only save you a spot, you still have to enroll.

If it is an ENGR class, use this form:
http://www.cisat.jmu.edu/engineering/override.aspx

If it is a Physics class:
Kim C Emerson
Physics Department
PCB 2186
office phone: +1 540 568 6109
e-mail: emersokc@jmu.edu

If it is a Math class:
The Math department has an online system.  See their website for details: http://www.jmu.edu/mathstat/  Pay attention to the deadlines!

If it is a Chemistry class:
Tammy Candido
Chemistry Department
PCB 1186
office phone: +1 540 568 6246
e-mail: candidtd@jmu.edu

9.  What if I have a hold on my account?
You will need to determine why you have the hold on your account.  You may do this by clicking on the hold and following the instructions to clear it up.  Some holds will not allow you to register for classes, so make sure you take care of these holds prior to your enrollment time.

10.  What about my Cluster One General Education classes?
All freshmen should finish their Cluster One General Education classes by the end of their freshmen year (this includes the summer).  You will not be able to take a Cluster One gen eds next year as they are reserved for freshmen only.  If you do not think you will be able to complete all three of your cluster one gen eds, please let me know immediately.

Just for you: Grad School Guide!!!

New Page. Just For You.

Grad School Guide

It's never to late to think about Graduate School? We put together a new page: Grad School Guide to help you get started. You can browse a variety of programs, universities and request information. Take a look today.

I’m reaching out on behalf of MIT Sloan and the Master of Finance Program to share a few updates and information about our growing program.  Launched in 2009, the MFin program offers one year of intensive finance training.  Combining tradition, innovation, theory, and practice, the MFin program prepares thought leaders for a broad range of careers in finance.  Building on the foundation of MIT Sloan’s powerful finance legacy, the Master of Finance Program offers a unique combination of heritage, resources, and relevance that will shape the leaders needed to effectively impact the complex global economy.  The core finance curriculum is complemented with elective courses, a research practicum, and professional seminars.  Through a rigorous hands-on curriculum and what we call “action learning”, students have the chance to build a deep reservoir of finance knowledge and immediately put that knowledge to work in the world.

I invite you and your students to learn more by reading the attached brochure and by visiting our website.  I would also like to ask you to post the attached flyer in an area that is visible to your students.

Lastly, the online application for the MFin class matriculating in summer 2013 is currently available here .  Also, for your reference, our application deadlines this year are:
November 8, 2012 (with decisions released by January 15th)
January 7, 2013 (with decisions released by March 14th)

We hope you will share this information about our program with your students.  If you have specific questions, please feel free to email me or give me a call.
Best,
Kimberly
