Patent Classifier – 3600 –
Mechanical / General
Serco North America is seeking a Patent Classifier to
review Patent Applications received from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
(USPTO) in the general field of mechanical engineering with an emphasis on air/land/and
sea transport vehicles; firearms, weapons, fasteners, material handling and
racking systems. Additional areas for consideration are: mechanical power
transmission systems; brake and spring systems, clutches, wheels; bearings;
seals; and lubrication systems.
The classifier will be expected to determine appropriate
application classifications in accordance with the US Patent Classification and
Cooperative Patent Classification structures through technical knowledge,
research and automated tools. The
successful candidate will have technical knowledge in one or more of the major
classification categories and must be motivated to exceed the contractual
productivity and quality targets.
Required Skills:
- Technical expertise in one or more of the following technologies: air/land/and sea transport vehicles; firearms, weapons, fasteners, material handling and racking systems. Expertise in mechanical power transmission systems; brake and spring systems, clutches, wheels; bearings; seals; and lubrication systems desirable.
- Ability to function in a production-based environment, including operating efficiently, accurately and at a significant pace.
- Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail is a must.
- The ability to use computer systems to perform research and classification operations.
- Demonstrated experience performing research.
- Motivated to exceed the contractual productivity and quality targets.
- Ability to work independently and within a team without need of excessive supervision.
- Ability to work on a computer workstation 8 hours per day.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include:
- Demonstrated ability to learn the patent classification/examination process.
- Apply knowledge of classification process to assign U.S. Patent Codes (USPC) and Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) codes to complex technical subject matter.
- Assign USPC and CPC classifications within Tech Center specific classes.
- Use automated systems to perform research and classification operations.
- Function in a production-based environment with emphasis on quality and productivity.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Work closely with others in a team environment.
- Attend on-going program training to expand knowledge in additional USPC classes.
Education: A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or
related discipline, or equivalent mix of education and experience.
Experience: Demonstrated
experience in technical field and/or on teams within a technical field.
Security Clearance: Applicant
selected may be subject to a government security investigation and must meet
eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Applicant must
be a United States citizen.
